I take referrals from both primary and secondary  schools to work with children within the school environment. In addition to the 1:1 sessions with the child I work closely with the child’s family, offering support and strategies to parents and teachers.

School based Play Therapy can be funded through various sources including social services, LEAS’s or charitable bodies.

As a play therapist within your school, I will see the child/ren weekly on the same day and time each week.

4 children – on site for approximately 7 hours each week.

3 children – on site for approx. 5.5 hours each week

2 children – onsite for approx. 3.5 hours each week

This includes play therapy sessions, initial assessment/ planning and post-session ending report, the 6-8 weekly review meetings and drop-in consultations for teaching staff to discuss any issues.

I provide all documentation, assessment forms and play therapy kit.  It generally follows a standard flow;

  • Referral

  • Meeting with school staff for referral discussion and further information

  • Meeting with parent/carer for initial assessment, discussion of therapeutic intervention plan

  • Meeting with child and parent, assessments

  • Play therapy sessions

  • 6-8 weeks review meetings with school and parents

  • Planned ending

  • Final meetings with school and parent with written report.

For the provision of Play Therapy to take place in your school I would require a private room dedicated to play therapy for the duration of the sessions, accessible every week for the agreed day/time.

Teaching staff and school employees should familiarise themselves with the 5 essential ‘C’s’ of Play therapy;

Confidentiality: The play therapy has to be private to allow the child to feel safe enough to express and explore difficult and painful experiences.

Consistency: The play therapy takes place at the same time, in the same space each week. It is important that no changes to attendance occur. Even when the child is disruptive or difficult.

Commitment: That the play therapist, teaching staff and parents/carers are committed to helping the child. This requires patience, trust and dedication to the play therapy process.

Consent: Before play therapy can start, the parent/carer (or person holding legal responsibility for the child) must give written consent to play therapy. The child must also give verbal assent prior to starting.

Child protection: Play therapists adhere to the school’s Child Protection procedures, the children Act (1989) and local authority child protection procedures.

If you require a consultation to discuss play therapy in your school, please get in touch and I will come to your school to discuss.

I provide play therapy within the Surrey area; including Kingston-upon Thames, Richmond, Epsom, Hounslow. Although other areas would be considered.
